The idea of Small Press Fest came out of a desire to platform and celebrate
artists and creatives who diversify Aotearoa’s literary ecosystem as
well as publish/archive experimental work that might struggle to get
representation in more traditional spaces. In my mind, small press takes
more risks, it is less formalised and is about finding the gap. It is also an
attempt to take back control of an industry that many people have felt left
out of or suspicious of established publishing processes in Aotearoa.
We wanted to ask: Why independent? What takes a book from inception
to print? How do we continue to support emerging texts and specialist
libraries? What is the future of publishing and archiving in Aotearoa?
